Artificial Intelligence as a Knowledge Gatekeeper.
What use is emergent technology as Big Brother 2.0?
This is quite unsettling.
While much has been written about ChatGPT AI and its apparent bias, this example of reality denial for a book written in 1944 sticks out. With current discussions on ‘book banning’ in the news, to have an AI program refute entirely that the book was published questions the entire premise of AI viability as a tool that would even be useful to society.
The inquiry should have been an easy task to summarize the content of the book. I wasn't testing the AI with a gotcha request. I merely wanted a summary for an article I am writing. That it could not (or would not) retrieve factually historic information does not bode well for the future viability of this tech. If it can only give approved knowledge to the user it is simply 1984 2.0 Big Brother for the 21st century.
J. M. Spaight, while not a household name, is still an important early architect of military morality as it pertains to aerial bombing of civilian targets. The more precise inquiry should be: Who is setting up these firewalls to past knowledge, and why are these parameters being put in place? This shouldn’t be taken lightly as AI technology becomes more intrusively a part of society.
As I have written about Artificial Intelligence before, the technology has vast possibilities to enrich society and numerous applications in the areas of science, medicine, and everyday life. But, it will never be trusted if a constant taint of political or ideological censorship continues to surround it.
Leave a comment on what future you see for AI and its applications in society.
