Recently I discovered an alarming personal attribute to my character. It must have been hiding in plain sight over the four decades I have spent on this earth. Luckily social media was more than helpful to point it out for me. It started out on a Twitter post in regards to the percentage of Republicans who have reservations on continuing the endless spigot of American financial and military equipment to Ukraine.
Now, the point being made was that not everyone is in lockstep agreeance on the idea of endless support for Ukraine with more weapons and American tax dollars. Media and political figures try to paint a sweeping picture of the conflict as a grand battle between good and evil with Russia as a caricatured villain and Ukraine being the plucky democracy against the Red menace. This has led to some odd bedfellows agreeing on the US stance. When people such as Hollywood’s Rob Reiner and Lindsey Graham are on the same page…well, let’s just say I have questions.
A more nuanced perspective requires one to consider the region and its history, along with a host of other geopolitical concerns as to how best to resolve it. Believing in diplomacy and taking steps to de-escalate instead of unlimited support for the proxy war between the US and Russia, with Ukrainians used as the fodder, is a valid stance to take. One can rationally think that when we’re at the point of training Ukraine soldiers in Oklahoma to use Patriot missile systems that it might be time to take a moment and assess where this situation is going.
Training Ukraine on Patriot Missile System
Back to what I mentioned at the beginning of this post, someone was kind enough to provide some much needed wisdom about my motivations through their psychic powers.
So, there it is. I am pro-genocide for not thinking that the smartest option is to keep pouring funds and armaments into the gaping maw of the Russia-Ukraine war. It was startling news to me to find out about my genocidal tendencies that lurked in the background all these years. I abhorred the Rwandan genocide when it happened, or so I thought at the time. As a voracious student of history, I cannot recall nodding my head in approval for past conflicts based on the entire eradication of a people.
Seriously, this is a textbook example of the Ad Hominem fallacy where one conducts an attack on the person vs. countering the ideas presented with an argument or evidence to the contrary. It is not breaking news to anyone that this type of Ad Hominem retort is used every day on social media platforms for endless topics, but the disturbing trend is how this same technique has become the norm for discussions in legacy media and politics. Character attacks are as old as time, yet debate and policies have lost all sense of decorum and process.
For example, take the topic of US Immigration policy. A subject that has a long history dating back to the country’s founding that is filled with complexities, numerous factors to consider, and no ‘solution’ that would come close to satisfying everyone. However, dare to voice the opinion that the country should rein in how many are allowed into the US (legally or illegally) and expect the predictable attacks and name-calling to ensue. ‘Racist’ ‘Bigot’ ‘Xenophobe’ is freely tossed in the direction of the individual or organization that takes this stance. Rarely are intelligent discussions made on the environmental impact, economic results, or sociocultural concerns. No, it turns into “You hate ‘fill-in-the-blank’ people!” or bromides about historical immigration patterns from a century ago. Too much emotional reasoning and Sophist Rhetoric on these issues disguise the realities of unfettered immigration, and its effects on a nation.
Moving forward I will keep my genocidal tendencies in check as Western Civilization continues her steady march to Idiocracy status.
Great piece. Just an important tension to press on. You just described "the morality binary"...
"Ad Hominem fallacy where one conducts an attack on the person vs. countering the ideas presented with an argument or evidence to the contrary."
I'm writing a piece about this tonight. Specifically, what happens to those who put every chip into "The Moral vs. The Monsters" once that propaganda wave ends. It's not a good prognosis.
When no one has something smart or true to comment back they do attack your person or spout dumb things. While billions of US tax dollars are wasted American children and our elderly go hungry and or are homeless.
